The Ranking System: How does it work?
New-hire TraineeFollowing completion of the application and hiring process, all newly hired pilots are given a unique multi digit Pilot Identification Number (which will be used during their entire career at IndyAir), and introduced as trainees into the IndyAir flight training program. This is a fairly short course that covers the essentials of basic pilotage (flying the airplane), air traffic control communication, flight planning, and weather. At the same time, trainees will also need to take an additional course for the Cessna 208 Caravan type-rating. This course covers the performance characteristics of the Cessna 208. After completion of both courses, the trainee will be issued a written pre-solo exam that checks his or her knowledge of aviation as well as the performance characteristics of the Cessna 208 before taking on their first flight. Following successful completion of the written exam, trainees will be signed off to take their first solo flight and checkride with IndyAir, a short flight issued to the trainee by the company to prove the trainee's working knowledge of aviation and the aircraft. (Checkride hours do not count towards pilot ranking.)

Cessna 208 Caravan Program
Following the trainee's first solo flight, they are admitted into the Cessna 208 Caravan program as First Officers. They will be limited to this position until they log at least ten (10) hours of flying time in the Cessna 208. Upon completion of aforementioned ten (10) hours of flight time as a First Officer in the Cessna 208 program, all First Officer pilots have their ranks automatically increased to Captain. Once at this point, they will be responsible to log at least ten (10) more hours before they are eligible to take the Dash 8-Q400 type-rating course and written exam as potential Q400 First Officers.

Dash 8-Q400 Program
Upon completion of the Q400 written exam, a successful checkride on the Dash 8-Q400 will need to be flown and submitted before the potential Q400 First Officer can be elevated to that position. After ten (10) more hours of flying time have been logged, all Dash 8 First Officers' ranks will be automatically elevated to the rank of Captain on the Dash 8. Following ten (10) hours of logged time in the Dash 8 as Captain, pilots ranks will be elevated to Senior Captain, an honorable rank in which the pilot will be expected to not only fly as before, but also to be a mentor and guide to those below them if they are able.
